As one of South Africa’s largest urban commercial radio stations, Metro FM is a popular frequency in the country. Over the years the station has evolved and introduced the Metro FM Music Awards to recognise the musical achievements of some of the nation’s biggest artists.
The 2017 Metro FM Music Awards Nominations ceremony took place at a glitzy event in Johannesburg on Tuesday 17 January 2017. Attended by some of the biggest names in South African music, the event announced nominees in various categories.

The Song of the Year category will see the likes of hip hop artist Kwesta competing with festive season anthem “Wololo” by Babes Wodumo. “Ska Bhora Moreki” by VKing Monada is also a contender in this category.
Best Hip Hop Album sees the likes of Kwesta’s “Dakar” competing with Anatii’s “Artifact.”
Songstress Amanda Black’s offering “Amazulu” earned her five nominations on the night- one of them in the Best New Artist category, alongside Nasty C, for “Bad Hair Extension.”
Idols winner Khaya Mthethwa’s album “The Dawn” will be competing in the Best Urban Gospel category. Another contender in this category is “Mmuso” by gospel group We Will Worship.
Best R&B nominees include Zonke with “Funky Lovin” and Amanda Black with “Separate.”
Thandiswa Mazwai’s recent release “Belede” made the cut for Best Urban Jazz nominees, alongside Brenda Mntambo’s “So Much More.” Legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela’s “No Borders” was also nominated on the night.
The theme for the 2017 Metro FM Music Awards Nominations is “What’s next is all that matters.”
On the night, set to be held on 25 February 2017 at iNkosi Albert Luthuli ICC, every award winner will receive R100 000 prize money.
Fans also have until 23:59 on Sunday 12 February 2017 to cast their votes for their favourite artists.
