How to Get Your Money Back If You Have Been Scammed

Being scammed can be one of the most humiliating and financially debilitating experiences anyone can go through. It’s happened to many different types of people and the scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, often leaving people exasperated by the time they realise how they were scammed.

One thing that is never guaranteed if you have been scammed is getting your money back. Some have been able to, while others have not. It all really depends on the type of situation.

Types of scams:

One of the most popular scams online involves an offer to adopt a dog. Generally, people wanting to adopt may form an emotional bond, which is then used to extract money upfront. Scammers will threaten to put the puppy down if money for transport, food or inoculations is not received.

Another popular scam involves job seekers who are tricked into paying upfront fees for securing employment.

While many of these scams occur online, payments are not always online and may have been made by direct deposit into certain accounts, or by credit card – which is where it becomes tricky.

If you want to get your money back if you have been scammed there are a number of steps you can take.

  • Start by identifying whom the items were purchased from.
  • Read the Terms and Conditions carefully.
  • Contact the vendor in writing to request a refund.
  • Contact your financial institution. If you paid by credit card you may be able to dispute the changes and cancel the card. If you paid via PayPal, there may be an option to dispute payment by clicking on the Resolution Center option.
  • Pull out all contracts, receipts or any other proof of contact with the company.
  • Consider legal action as a last resort.

To get your money back if you have been scammed you need to be diligent about the entire process.
