The mobile telecommunications sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in South Africa and by extension in Southern Africa.This has been driven by explosive growth in mobile telephones and broadband connectivity.The increase in usage of mobile and smartphones has also led to increasing numbers of people using the internet. In a nutshell, this is a multi billion industry which will only grow bigger and bigger. One entity working towards providing the necessary support to this sector is mLab Southern Africa.
mLab Southern Africa provides incubation support to mobile developers and entrepreneurs.The focus of this organisation is to provide subsidised office space with meeting rooms, allowing members to benefit from being part of a mobile start up community. mLab Southern Africa also offers training and accreditation on mobile technologies and entrepreneurship and offers business mentoring and coaching as well as access to market research information and other knowledge repositories.
This incubator is designed and equipped with test bays for testing mobile applications and services as well as organising regular networking events. Members will also be assisted in accessing finance whether its in form of grants, seed capital, angel investments or venture capital.
Membership to this lab is divided into three categories.There is one called community which is free and anyone can join. Silver and gold members pay a minimum fee and receive more structured support from mLab Southern Africa. Silver and gold members also have to undergo interviews before being accepted.
mLab is set to provide much needed business, technical and financial support to this fast growing and critical sector of the economy.
