It’s the season of the Android phone and it’s a rarity not to see every second person without one, well because usually you just can’t miss it. Sony is going back to the days when having a smaller phone meant a great deal, with the introduction of the Z3 Compact. Of course these days having a phone the size of both hands is the new thing in town but Sony thought of those few of us who just love our smart phones small.
Don’t get confused, small does in no way mean less because the features on this little baby are explosive, and it has the looks too. The 4,6 inch device, which is a bit smaller compared to the Z3’s 5,2 inch, comes with all the features found on the Z1,2, and 3. While the Compact is slightly larger than the iPhone 5, it’s smaller than the iPhone 6 and the translucent rounded frame protects it for those with slippery hands. Just like the other Z models the compact can stay underwater, at least 1.5m and up to 30 minutes; however Sony specifies that it has to be “fresh water”.
Compared to the Z3’s 3G RAM, the Compact comes with 2G as well as 16GB flash storage for a microSD card up to 128GB. If that doesn’t get photographers and videographers jumping up and down, then nothing will. Expect to shoot some awesome pictures at a picnic or even a night out with the Compact that boasts LCD res of 720X1280 pixels for pixel density of 319ppi.
The Compact also comes with Android OS – 4.4, better known as KitKat, which will soon be upgraded to 5.0 or Lollipop; however it’s still unclear when that version will grace sunny South Africa. Sony has included its own apps on the Compact including Walkman, Playstation and Movies which will function as before, but due to region restrictions South Africans will only play certain content if loaded manually.
Connectivity on the Compact is on point and supports most 3G and 4G/LTE bands. Your worries of your battery dying on you may also be a thing of the past with the 2600 mAh lithium-ion battery which makes for long lasting battery with a two day charge.
One can expect even more from the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. That’s a handful for a phone that only weighs 129g and is only 8.6mm thick. For anything from R6 700 cash, this awesome device deserves to be owned.
