Yakuza Zero is a game released on January 24, 2017 and published by SEGA. Technology site IGN has called it a “Prequel to SEGA’s Japanese crime saga that is a violent and compelling drama with a liberal splash of silliness”.
Set in Tokyo in December 1988, players will have a chance to see where it all started for series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. In the game, you get to follow Kiryu, not yet the Dragon of Dojima, as he tries to regain his honour after getting blamed for a botched debt collection that ended in murder.
For the first time, Yakuza Zero players will be able to play as Goro Majima, the Mad Dog of Shimano, as he tries to regain his clan.
Each character will possess their own unique fighting style. Styles can be developed by spending money you collect from fights and missions to invest in new skills and stat boosts.
According to a Gamespot review:
“By weaving a complex web of relationships and alliances, Zero’s story grows ever more fascinating; proving to be equal parts surprising and exciting from beginning to end.”
“Zero’s plot is definitely a high point and it’s dutifully conveyed through effective camera work and strong voice acting.”
In Yakuza Zero, fictional slices of Tokyo and Osaka are based on real-life locations but tailored to custom-fit the adventurer’s scope and scale.
The game stays true to the era in which it’s set, with characters reminiscent of the late 1980s. Players will be able to use each character’s unique fighting style to achieve the goal of helping Goro Majima to regain his clan.
Players will be able to understand the back-story of Kazuma Kiryu before becoming the Dragon of Dojima.
